Welcome to All-4-Fun week!!

All-4-Fun, spelled backwards is Fun-4-All!!

That's what the week is all about, fun for the whole family, and fun for jeepers of all skill and rig levels.  For 2005, the site was Gunnison, Colorado in the south-central part of the state.  What a week!!!  From high altitude (8500') sun to afternoon showers some days and cool nights, the cool weather was a nice break from the redundant heat of Denver!!  This being my 10th All-4-Fun and Molly's 8th!.  I was able to get the whole week off and spend all week in the Gunnison area.

This is my 7th straight All-4-Fun Report, I hope you like it.  It's a way to preserve on record the fun week, and a way for someone who has never been to want to go.  I also bought a Nikon Coolpix 5900 (great digital camera--I recommend!!) and took over 350 photos during the week (which was narrowed down to 236 in all the reports here).  Enjoy...

Trips in the Gunnison area varied for different skills and adventures,

like easy and scenic Slate Road...

...to moderate trails like Italian Creek....

...and difficult trails like Devils Punchbowl (Crystal Canyon).

This year, the 39th Annual MHJC All-4-Fun Gunnison played host to around 300 registered wheelers from Sat. July 23rd to Sat. July 30th.   Along with some 80 MHJC members, there were registered participants from all over the country.  Well over 1000 people attended the weeklong event once again in 2005.  Thank you for coming from afar, we hope you enjoyed the best family jeeping event in the country.  Each All-4-Fun every year would not be as successful as the last without the long hours of support and help of each committee member doing their part.

Arriving from all over the country...

...to see the beautiful countryside around Gunnison.

Thanks to all who helped, who can now sit back and accept this congratulations.  It takes a lot of people to put an event like this together and make it work. Thanks to everyone on the MHJC Committees for making this a fun and successful week.

Thanks to Chevette for chairing this year!!

The BBQ committee headed by Richard Dillon...

Registration by Mike and Angle Ireson's Committee!!!

Thanks to all who helped make Gunnison 2005 a success !!!!

& Thanks to those for coming!!

Sales Chair Christine Taft and committee!

Kid's Games Committee (Ed Collins)--Thanks!!

Gatta love the free beer and soda organized by Paul Zimmerman!!

Everyone was so upbeat and in a great mood all week.  Was it the beer?  Nope, just friendly people, all with the same hobby-----jeepin'.  After a long day on the trail, it was great to hang and swap trail stories in camp and under the Pavilion. There were propane campfires in camp, so the campfire stories were still alive!

Rocky Mountain scenery everywhere...

Crystal Mill near Marble...

A big Thank You to Rob Schleppy of 4x4 Used Parts Inc. was on hand once again (every year since 1989!!) to help out anyone in need of repairs. Discount Tire, Warn and Clemson 4Wheel Center, provided adult refreshments and sodas.  Thanks also to Dirk Ballinger (the Trail Boss) for organizing trips everyday, and making a Trail Leader's job easier.  It takes a lot to please over 350 Jeepers with fun trails for all skills and wants-great job!

American Flag Mountain...

The San Juans...

Crystal River waterfalls...

Jeepers from all over the country come to enjoy a week of jeepin' (5 days), and the social functions held every night under the big top year after year.  Bring your best lawn chair to show off.  This year in Gunnison was no exception, Sat. night: Orientation Night , Sun. night: Gunnison Appreciation Night (door prizes from local merchants), Mon. night: 'Parrot' Entertainment (same guy who had pigs last year), Tue. night: Bestop Ice Cream Social & entertainment, Wed. night: MHJC's BBQ-twice/Show-N-Shine Awards, Thur. night: MHJC's DOOR PRIZE NIGHT, and finally, Fri. night: Warn Night/BBQ/Live Band.

Tuesday's Live 'Parrot' entertainment took

everyone off guard with laughs and astonishment

(this parrot is roller skating!)...

There were even PIRATES in camp!!!

Tuesday's Bestop Ice Cream Social was another big hit!

Every night under the big top was one event after the other.

So popular, you need to set up your chair "before"

you go out that day on a trail...

So, as every night was planned, all you had to do was figure out from the 20 or so trips run each day (except Wed.) what trail you wanted to do! , Trips included: Cement Creek, Crystal City, Kebler Pass, Slate/ Gothic, Brush Creek, Cabin Creek, Gunsight Pass, Beaver Creek, Reno Divide, Willow Creek, East Brush, Italian Creek, American Flag Mtn., Lead King Basin, Pearl Pass, Devil's Punchbowl. Tomichi Pass, Hancock Pass, Alpine Tunnel, Taylor Pass, & along with Die Trying-Montrose & the San Juan's-Silverton/Telluride/Ouray.

Wildflowers everywhere!

Crystal Canyon Avalanche....

Sign-up sheets were up at 6pm the day before the run to sign up.  Trips met up at staging areas and left on ½ hour intervals from 8-10am.  I led 5 days of trails around Gunnison and the San Juans: (Sunday: Alpine Tunnel/Hancock Pass, Monday: Engineer Pass/Animas Forks/Placer and Piscayne Gulches, Tuesday: Black Bear Pass/Imogene Pass, Thursday: Italian Creek/American Flag Mtn./Reno Divide, and Friday: Poverty Gulch/Paradise Divide/Devil's PunchbowlSee my daily trip reports from each day/trip below.

Even Molly--my jeepin-sidekick enjoyed the week-her 8th year!

Here are the general  trail locations of

the trails offered at All-4-Fun 2005

based out of Gunnison.

Molly and I walked around and saw most all the camps represented from MHJC patrols, and many 4x4 clubs around the country.  Everyone was friendly, and seemed to recognize Molly from previous reports and other websites.  We were especially fond of the 'fireside' chat on most nights.  It's fun to meet and get to know other MHJC members, along with wheelers from across the country in such an informal setting.

Home for the week for Molly and I...

...just down from the 'Pirate Cove'.

Wednesday was a 'relax' day off from jeepin', and included a full day of FUN. One could enjoy some fishing nearby (on the Gunnison River), a mine tour, check out historic Gunnison, go jeeping again, or stay in camp for a full day of activities.  From the Parade downtown, Show-N-Shine, Kid's Playground, Vendor's under the open pavilion top, food and refreshments for lunch and dinner, and the awards ceremony at night, it was a great day!

Parade down Main Street...

Playground for the kids on Wednesday...

...while many manufactures on hand  for tips and deals.

The food Wed and Friday was great!!

On Thursday night--at 7pm sharp (I wished I were there!), the popular Door Prize night was run by Chevette Lovisone's committee (great job!).  Everyone was ready to receive over 350 door prizes to registered jeepers who were present (some even took home 2!).  Everyone got something and some even 2, beer and soda was also provided.

'Pirate Frenchie' of Western Adventures stepped up and took the stage during breaks to raise some $$$ for Children's Hospital.  He had people come up to be 'auctioned off' in pure fun.  When it was all done, Frenchie raised over $400!!!  I bought some Children's Hospital Raffle tickets (though none hit), as there were a lot of great prizes to win.  Also in tradition, the 'Jeep' Toughest 4 Letters traveling plaques was auctioned off.  Since 1988 All-4-Fun, money raised going to Children's Hospital, it comes back every year.  This year, A bid of $1200 ($200 from Fred Perry) was the top bid.  The plaque for 2005 will be in 'memory of Fred Ross'.

The ever-so-popular Thursday "Door Prize Night" was a great success!!

Clemson 4Wheel Drive  provided 'adult' refreshments...

The week of FUN finished up on Friday night with the WARN NIGHT BBQ, free beer/soda, and the band (which has played in previous years) started up at 6pm as part of Warn Night, sponsored by Warn Industries.  During intermission, Harold Ogden of Warn usually hands out some nice Warn products.  A big THANKS to WARN for their great support of All-4-Fun!

Thanks Harold and Warn!!

A country band played (which played last year in Georgetown, then Leadville, Silverton, Salida, Central City, & Fairplay in 99') played on til 11:30pm Friday night!  Wow--what a fun week!!  If you ever get the chance, come to ALL-4-FUN!!  Molly and I had a great time at ALL-4-FUN 2005!!

By early Sat. July 30th, the camping sites were almost empty, as happy and content jeepers would make their own treks back home out of the Gunnison River valley, til they return once again for their annual migration in a year (to SILVERTON!!).  Everyday of the week, either on the trail or in camp, was a blast!  This was a great All-4-fun!  A toast to the hosts and the guests (for coming!!), for another successful All-4-Fun this year in GUNNISON! See ya in 2006!!?!!

An appropriate Friday night sunset for a great week in Gunnison!!
